LCME site visit kicks off this weekend
The survey team representing the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) arrives this weekend to conduct IU School of Medicine's reaccreditation site visit. Highlights of the four-day visit include:
- Evaluative sessions covering a variety of topics, including educational program objectives; curriculum management; school finances; admissions and selection; financial aid and debt management; academic, career and personal counseling; student health; learning environment; diversity; and student research opportunities
- Meetings with pre-clerkship students, clerkship students and residents
- Tours of Indianapolis educational facilities and partner hospitals
- Meetings and tours at the Fort Wayne, Muncie and West Lafayette regional campuses
IU School of Medicine Dean Jay Hess will welcome the survey team and provide a leadership perspective of the school on Sunday evening, April 23. The visit will conclude Thursday afternoon, April 27. Eskenazi Health Foundation gives $2 million to support public health
A $2 million gift from the Eskenazi Health Foundation will help emergency physicians at IU School of Medicine develop innovative ways to serve the city's most vulnerable residents and address public health problems that drive patients to the emergency room.
The gift is endowed and will provide ongoing funding for an IU faculty member to conduct research, design community outreach programs and train future emergency physicians. The faculty member will be an emergency medicine physician who practices at Eskenazi Health, one of the nation’s largest safety net health systems.
"Particularly at Eskenazi Health, we know that our patients have needs that extend well beyond acute care," said Cherri D. Hobgood, MD, chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine and a practicing emergency medicine physician. "This gift will not only allow us to improve treatment in the ED, but it will also enable us to find effective ways to connect patients with essential services once they are discharged and facilitate the delivery of care outside the walls of the emergency department."
IU School of Medicine-affiliated emergency physicians across the state see more than 400,000 patients a year, more than 90,000 of whom are at Eskenazi Health in Indianapolis. They have a long record of collaborating with hospital, government and community partners to address an array of public health concerns.
“IU School of Medicine and Eskenazi Health have partnered to improve health care in Central Indiana for more than 100 years. As we explored how to broaden this relationship, the Eskenazi Health Foundation looked for ways we could help enhance research, community outreach and train the next generation of emergency medicine physicians,” said Ernest Vargo II, CFRE, president and CEO of the Eskenazi Health Foundation.

IU to provide paid parental leave for staff
Indiana University President Michael A. McRobbie has announced that IU will begin offering fully paid parental leave for all staff employees of the university.
The new program, endorsed last week by IU's Board of Trustees at its April meeting on the IU East campus, will go into effect July 1 and provide up to six weeks of paid leave for parents after a birth or adoption. The leave will be available to both mothers and fathers whose child is born or adopted on or after July 1, regardless of their marital or relationship status.
“This major new policy underscores the value Indiana University places on the well-being of its employees, and it is one that will help IU continue to attract and retain outstanding staff employees as the university prepares to enter its third century of service to the state, nation and world,” McRobbie said.
Paid parental leave will be available to all staff employees at IU who are in non-temporary positions of 30 hours or more per week and have been continuously employed in a benefits-eligible position for at least 12 months before the date of the birth or adoption of a child. If both parents are IU staff employees, each is entitled to take six weeks of paid leave. Staff employees will be able to use their leave on an intermittent basis, though it must be completed within six months following the birth or adoption.

Honoring outstanding teaching, research and service is an important part of IU School of Medicine’s culture. Nominations for faculty awards are accepted in the following categories: Scholar-Educator Award, Excellence in Faculty Mentoring Awards, Outstanding Community Engagement Award and Inspirational Educator Award. Register for senior banquet by April 28
The Senior Banquet and Awards Ceremony for the IU School of Medicine Class of 2017 will be held Friday, May 12, in the Grand Ballroom at the JW Marriott-Indianapolis. Students, family, friends, faculty and staff are invited to celebrate their achievements. A cocktail hour begins at 6 pm, followed by a three-course dinner and awards program at 7 pm.
Graduating students are invited to attend as a guest of the class at no charge, but must RSVP. Additional tickets are available for $50 each. Payment and reservations must be received no later than Friday, April 28, at this link.

Friday is deadline to submit Cancer Research Day abstracts
Tomorrow, Friday, April 21, is the deadline to submit abstracts for the May 17 IU Simon Cancer Center Cancer Research Day. Abstracts should be submitted for one of the following research categories:
- Basic science
- Population science/epidemiology
- Translational/clinical research
Students, fellows and faculty conducting cancer research at IUPUI, Indiana University-Bloomington, Purdue University, and the Harper Cancer Research Institute, a collaboration between the IU School of Medicine and the University of Notre Dame, are eligible to present at Cancer Research Day. Cash awards will be given for best poster(s) in each research category, by group. (Faculty are not eligible for cash awards.) A panel of judges will be assigned to review abstracts and posters by research category and group.

Carlos and Khan honored with AIM awards
W. Graham Carlos, MD, assistant dean for Medical Student Education, Phase 3, and assistant professor of clinical medicine; and Babar Khan, MD, assistant professor of medicine, have received Achievement in Medicine (AIM) awards from the St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild and the Indiana Blood Center.
The AIM award honors management-level members of the Eskenazi Health team who uphold the tradition of excellence in health care. Dr. Carlos is section chief of pulmonary/critical care at Eskenazi Health and Dr. Khan serves as medical director of the Eskenazi Health Critical Care Recovery Center.
IU Health partners with DaVita Kidney Care
IU Health recently announced a collaborative partnership with DaVita Kidney Care, the second-largest provider of dialysis services in the United States. DaVita operates more than 70 dialysis centers in Indiana (18 within 25 miles of Indianapolis).
As of June 1, the outpatient centers at IU Health University Hospital, the Chronic Outpatient Center in downtown Indianapolis and the Home Unit on the north side of Indianapolis will be owned and operated by DaVita, under the medical direction of IU Health Physicians nephrologists. IU Health is earmarking $3 million of the proceeds from the sale of the centers for dialysis education and research at the IU School of Medicine.
