Steven G. Becker, M.D., associate dean and director of IU School of Medicine-Evansville, was recently awarded the prestigious community Visionary Award during the annual Celebration of Leadership in Evansville.

A proposed rendering of the medical education and research center to be located in downtown Evansville.

The Celebration of Leadership is a conscious effort to seek and honor individuals, projects, businesses and organizations that make significant contributions to the Evansville community. Dr. Becker has been the driving force behind the collaborative education project in Southern Indiana that is bringing eight organizations together to expand medical education in the region.

"Great health care doesn't occur in any one silo. I'm honored to have received this award on behalf of our four hospital partners, four academic partners and the numerous community leaders of southwest Indiana who are taking a unique collaborative approach in making the vision of NeuMED a reality," Dr. Becker said.

The project plans to develop a multi-institutional health education and research complex in downtown Evansville, where students from Ivy Tech Southwest, the University of Southern Indiana, the University of Evansville and IU School of Medicine-Evansville will locate on a newly developed campus to share learning.

Additionally, in an effort to address health care shortages, Dr. Becker is working with four regional hospital partners to expand graduate medical education in southern Indiana by developing more residency programs to serve the long-term physician needs of the community and beyond.
