IUSM students promote bike safety with helmet giveaway

May 7, 2015

Earlier this spring, the IU School of Medicine Boys and Girls Clubs service-learning group, in collaboration with Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health, distributed dozens of bike helmets to kids at the LeGore Boys and Girls Club in Indianapolis.

In addition to ensuring each child had a properly fitting safety helmet, IUSM students educated the children about bike safety at several safety stations. Funding for the helmet giveaway was made possible by the student group faculty advisor, Richard Gunderman, M.D., Ph.D., through the AOA Medical Student Service Leadership Project grant. As part of the service-learning project, IUSM students, in partnership with the Boys and Girls Clubs, will provide helmets to 600 children at various clubs in Indianapolis.
