IUSM-Evansville groundbreaking: final budget approved, McRobbie to attend
October 22, 2015
On Oct. 16, the State Budget Committee gave final approval for the release of $25.2 million in state funding for the Multi-Institutional Academic Health Science and Research Center in downtown Evansville.
The groundbreaking ceremony is Friday, Oct. 23 at 10 am CDT, with Indiana University president Michael McRobbie scheduled to attend. The celebration is free and open to the public.
The budget panel approved $19.2 million for IU and $6 million for the University of Southern Indiana. The project also is receiving $30 million in local funding. The center will encompass about 149,000 gross square feet and expand the IU School of Medicine operations in the city, as well as health-related education programs from the University of Southern Indiana and the University of Evansville. The Downtown site covers almost six square blocks, with its boundaries including Locust, Cherry, Southeast Fourth and Southeast Sixth streets. The building will feature classrooms, an amphitheater and a simulation center.
McRobbie said the project will significantly increase the opportunities for medical and health-related education in Evansville and across southwestern Indiana by adding IU School of Medicine residents at Evansville, Jasper and Vincennes hospitals.
"Everyone realizes this is more than an economic boost to the city," said Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke. "It's really an important change in how medical education proceeds in Indiana. A lot of cities in Indiana, like a lot of states, have seen a growing shortage in the health care professionals. So the fact that there's a collaborative effort on the educational front and on the medical front is really important."
Construction is expected to start later this fall. Completion is tentatively set for December 2017.
