IUSM Orchestra performs holiday music for children, families at Riley Hospital for Children
December 18, 2014
The IU School of Medicine Orchestra was recently joined by musicians of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra to perform holiday music for children and families spending the season at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health.
The concert, which was the second in a tradition begun last year, took place Dec. 9 in the atrium of the Simon Family Tower at Riley Hospital. Selections included "Sleigh Ride" by Leroy Anderson, "White Christmas" by Irving Berlin, "Concert Suite" from The Polar Express by Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard and "The Nutcracker Suite" by Tchaikovsky. Maria Solis, a soprano and fourth-year medical student, also led the audience in a holiday sing-along. David Schurger conducted.
The IUSM Orchestra features more than 40 musically talented medical and dental students, medical residents, faculty and staff of the IU schools of medicine and dentistry. In addition to the children at the live performance, Riley kids who were not able to attend or unable to leave their rooms will enjoy the show throughout the holiday season through a series of in-room re-broadcasts planned on the hospital's closed circuit television channel.
The event was sponsored by the IUSM Office of Medical Service Learning.
