December 10, 2015

IU School of Medicine MS2 students are set to make a little magic—and share some laughs—at the Second Year Show on Friday, Jan. 15. That same weekend, on Saturday, Jan. 16, MedTalks brings together unique perspectives on the world of health and medicine in a series of 20-minute talks that aim to inspire and provoke thought and conversation.

Second Year Show

Intended to unify both the Class of 2018 and the wider IUSM community, “The Magic of Medicine” blends comedy and satire to portray medical school through the eyes of students, faculty, and staff. While the event raises money for the MS2 class’ Match Day, the show has a broader mission to enhance relationships between students and faculty, build class-wide camaraderie and momentum heading into clinical rotations, and enrich culture within IUSM.

“The thing that I love about the Second Year Show is that it allows very busy and stressed medical students to take a step back from their work and come together,” explains Melissa Knisley, vice president of production for this year’s show. “It allows us to poke a bit of fun at ourselves and our current lives in medical school while working as a team to create a work of art.”

The Second Year Show is a statewide event that encourages students and faculty at all IUSM campuses to collaborate on a fundraising initiative. Other classes are also encouraged to get involved by producing a skit or video for the show.

MS2 student organizers modeled the Second Year Show after similar, highly successful endeavors at Harvard Medical School and Yale School of Medicine where second year shows have become time-honored traditions.

Save the Date: The Magic of Medicine will take place at 7 pm, Friday, Jan. 15, in the Egyptian Room at Old National Centre, 502 N. New Jersey St., in Indianapolis. Check out a preview of the show. Tickets are available at Students $13; Alumni and General Public $17.

The MedTalks program gathers a diverse mix of people representing a range of perspectives on topics related to health and medicine. A series of 20 minute talks are intended to inspire new ideas and provoke thoughtful conversation about the modern challenges of providing health and medical care.

Not all speakers are confirmed yet, but the current lineup covers a range of timely topics, including the future of biomedical 3D printing, the impact of medical missions, and how photography can enhance care for the dying poor. Speakers represent medical leaders in the general community and on campus at IU School of Medicine.

“This year, the program also includes original inspirational stories and video shorts from physician educators,” says Andrew Piropato, IUSM MS2. “I think this will be a nice touch and resonate with our audience. It also plays nicely with the theme of the second year show, the ‘Magic of Medicine’.”

Save the Date: MedTalks will take place from noon until 2 pm, Saturday, Jan. 16, in the Ruth Lilly Learning Center (located on the lower level of the Riley Outpatient Center [ROC]) at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. Following the program will be a short reception and meet-and-greet with the speakers with food and refreshments outside the auditorium. MedTalks is free and open to the public. Speaker lineup will be announced soon at
